The Construction Forum STL Young Leaders Group held its first-ever quarterly networking event on Wednesday, March 6 at the tasting room of Parker’s Table in Richmond Heights.

Besides enjoying wine, beer and artisan foods offered by their host and YLG sponsor Jonathan Parker, the group had the opportunity to network with a variety of fellow upcoming leaders in the industry. Attendees ranged from project managers, architects, and engineers, to accountants, estimators, and several members of the current cohort of the Building Union Diversity program.

Current YLG Chair Justin Schmeltz, EI, MS, of Horner & Shifrin, encouraged the young leaders in training to get to know one another and to get involved in the group’s mission of engaging with youth to mentor them and encourage them to consider careers in construction.

During brief announcements Schmeltz told of the YLG’s engagement with youth in Kingdom House’s Kingdom Academy, as well as career events at various schools.

Rachel Boemer, program director for the Construction Career Development Initiative (CCDI) talked about mentoring opportunities available through her organization.

Roz Sherman-Voellinger, labor community service liaison for the United Way of Greater St. Louis was present to talk about opportunities mentoring women and minorities entering the industry.

Tom Finan, CFSTL executive director outlined the work of Gateway Welcome Project (GWP), a not-for-profit co-founded by CFSTL which works with immigrant/refugee youth. GWP is currently working on a major soccer complex at Kingdom House, which will involve both the Young Leaders Group and Kingdom Academy.
