VIDEO: Erb Equipment Steps Up for “Beyond the Backpack” School Event

By on August 14, 2019

This past weekend (Saturday, Aug. 10) the Construction Forum Education Foundation and the Construction Forum Young Leaders Group participated in Beyond Housing’s annual “Beyond the Backpack”.  Beyond Housing is just what it name implies — a social service agency that builds communities and helps underserved families improve their lives.

About 3,000 backpacks are given away and kids get free haircuts, opportunities for after-school programs, and exposure to various organizations. CFEF has participated since 2015.

CFEF asked Carrie Roider, CEO of Erb Equipment, a third-generation, eight-store John Deere dealer (and the sixth largest woman-owned business in St. Louis) if she would “lend” their backhoe simulator. Erb’s delivery driver Kevin Wall not only delivered it but stayed and ran it. This video shows Wall interacting with parents and kids.

Also assisting kids and the parents in the CFEF tent were Construction Forum STL Director of Administration Dede Hance and Horner & Shifrin’s Justin Schmeltz, who chairs the Young Leaders Group.

Erb is lending CFEF the simulator again next weekend again (Saturday Aug. 17) for an event at Jennings High School — a nationally-recognized district with a majority African American/reduced-and-free-lunch population. BTW, Jenning’s Superintendent Dr. Art McCoy serves on the CFEF board of directors. The district has worked closely with the construction industry on a number of programs.
