“Accountability” Stressed at Painting/Drywall Awards

By on November 3, 2017

Former St. Louis baseball Cardinal Rick Ankiel told members of the Painting and Decorating Foundation that accountability to his team members was the most important thing that the Cardinal organization had taught him. He was speaking at the organization’s  39th annual fellowship banquet and Finishing Touch Awards.

Ankiel escaped an abusive childhood in Florida to become a pitching phenom, only to implode as a rookie with the “yips” and then reinvent himself as an extremely successful outfielder and hitter. The support he received from the Cardinal organization allowed him to realize his potential personally and professionally he said.

Ankiel said that his experience in baseball sounded a lot like the successful partnerships between contractors and their union craftspersons that the banquet celebrated. Ankiel stressed the importance of showing up, supporting teammates, owning mistakes, and having fun on the job.
