From St. Louis Business Journal:  Nick Nichols, head of operations for the St. Louis Port Authority, died Tuesday. John Parker, spokesman for St. Louis Development Corp., said the cause was a heart attack. Nichols was 81.

Parker said Nichols had been with the city for 36 years. Previously, Nichols was a 24-year veteran of the U.S. Air Force.

“He was proud of the work that we do here, and most proud of the many expansions of the St. Louis Port Authority,” Otis Williams, SLDC executive director, said in a statement. “We are extremely sad about his passing.”

Nichols leaves his wife, Deanie, and two grown children. Funeral arrangements are pending.

A little-known economic development entity led by Director Susan Taylor and under the SLDC umbrella, the port authority has received more attention of late because of its inclusion in the plan to build a Major League Soccer stadium downtown.
