Construction Pinewood Derby Rallys for Boy Scouts

By on April 21, 2017

Despite competition for audience from AGCMO’s annual reception Thursday night, the Sixth Annual Construction Pinewood Derby rallied solid fan support and friendly rivalries. Cars in the race are built by employees of industry firms.

The event raised $62,000 for the Greater St. Louis Council, Boy Scouts of America. Scott Wilson, CEO of S.M. Wilson was chair of this year’s event. Committee members were Dan Wienstroer of the Painting and Decorating Foundation; Matt Doell of Sachs Electric; Dr. John Gaal of the STL/KC Carpenters Regional Council; Mark Hugeback of M+H Architects; and Matt Mueller of the ACW Alliance.

Some cars are dad and son projects. Others are technical statements from the competing firms. Jarrell Mechanical entered a car sheathed in sleek sheet metal. Sachs Electric’s car had flashing lights on top of it.

A joint entry by Construction Forum STL, the Forum’s Young Leaders Group, and the Construction Forum Education Foundation was built by Nathan Garrett, an apprentice carpenter at Terbrock and Sons and a member of the Young Leaders Group. In a nod to “Mad Max,”  Garrett embedded his car with power saw blades.

The event, held at the Moto Museum had grandstands, an open bar, hearty race food like brisket and burgers, and some quasi serious-looking officials weighing in cars.
